Surviving Dubai Summers with a Newborn: A Practical Guide

Summer in the UAE isn't just "hot weather" in the way most baby-care advice assumes — it's a different set of rules entirely. Anything written for a mild climate needs adjusting once outdoor temperatures pass 40°C, even if you're rarely outside for long.
Dressing a newborn in the UAE summer is mostly about breathability, not layering down to almost nothing. A lightweight, loose-fitting cotton bodysuit indoors is usually enough given how consistently air-conditioned most homes and malls are — the bigger risk indoors is actually overcooling from AC, not overheating. Keep a light layer or wrap on hand for moving between an air-conditioned space and the outside heat.
Heat rash is the most common issue parents deal with here, especially in the neck folds, underarms, and diaper area where moisture gets trapped. Loose, breathable fabric and prompt diaper changes help more than any cream. If you do notice rash, brief nappy-free time in a cool, safe space helps it clear faster than most products.
For outdoor time, the practical answer is: avoid it between roughly 11am and 4pm entirely in peak summer, even for a two-minute walk to the car. Early morning or after sunset are really the only comfortable windows. If you must go out midday, minimize the time between air-conditioned car and air-conditioned destination — the parking-lot-to-entrance stretch is often the hottest part of any outing.
Hydration matters even for exclusively breastfed or formula-fed babies who don't need extra water — what changes is how often they'll want to feed, since babies often feed more frequently in heat to stay hydrated. Don't be surprised if your baby wants shorter, more frequent feeds during the hottest months.
