The Newborn Essentials Checklist: What You Actually Need in the First 3 Months

Most newborn checklists are written by retailers, not parents — which is why they tend to run to forty or fifty items. In practice, the first three months come down to a much shorter list, built around three things: keeping your baby warm and comfortable, feeding without a fight, and getting everyone as much sleep as possible.
Clothing-wise, you need fewer sizes than you'd think. Newborns move through 0-3M sizing faster than most parents expect, so buy lightly in that size and more generously in 3-6M. Five to seven bodysuits, four or five sleepsuits, and two or three lightweight layers cover almost every day. Choose soft, breathable fabric — organic cotton in particular resists the pilling and stiffening that cheaper blends develop after repeated washing, which matters when you're washing baby clothes every day or two.
For feeding, whether you're breastfeeding, formula feeding, or both, having two or three bottles on hand from week one saves a late-night scramble, even if you don't plan to use them often. If you're expressing milk at all, a reliable electric pump is worth the investment over a manual one — the time saved adds up fast in month two and three.
Sleep is where new parents overspend. You don't need a full nursery set up before the birth. A safe sleep space, a couple of swaddles or sleep sacks, and a reliable way to know when a diaper needs changing at 3am (a dim nightlight helps more than any gadget) will get you through the early weeks. Big furniture purchases can wait.
The one thing worth not skimping on: diapers and a proper diaper-changing setup. You'll go through six to ten diapers a day at this stage, so comfort, fit, and having the right size on hand matters more than almost anything else on this list.
